Fox Island Lighthouse Asssociation | Lake Leelanau
Fox Island Lighthouse Association is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving and restoring the historic South Fox Island Light Station, located about 17–22 miles offshore from the Leelanau Peninsula in northern Lake Michigan. Built in 1867 to guide vessels through the Manitou Passage, the station includes multiple original structures (including two light towers, a fog-signal building, and keepers’ quarters) and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.
Working in partnership with the Michigan DNR on state-owned land, the association relies on community volunteers and supporters to restore the remote complex, protect its natural surroundings, and keep this important piece of Great Lakes maritime history accessible for future generations.
